Last night police, friends and relatives were struggling to fathom why Richard Smith butchered his wife Clair, Ben, nine, and 13-month-old Aaron before killing himself in a fire a day later.
Officers are investigating the theory that the 37-year-old junior football coach flipped after he was challenged by Clair, 36, over claims he had started a close relationship with another woman in recent weeks.
She and Aaron were killed by stab wounds to the chest. Ben was also knifed but died after being suffocated, police said
